February Wine of the Month

Vidal Fleury

Crozes-Hermitage

The story of Vidal Fleury begins in 1781 as the oldest continuing grower/winery in the Rhône The Winery received an international following and in 1787 the wines were brought to America by Thomas Jefferson. These wines were described as “Justly celebrated” by the founding father.

Crozes-Hermitage is a region in the Northern Rhone known for Syrah. The Vidal Fleury Crozes-Hermitage is 100% Syrah grown on soils of alluvial soil and steep granite terraces. The soil is covered with pebbles and rolled stones which radiate heat and drain water which creates a great environment for stressing the vines and help in ripening the grapes.

The steeply terraced vines mean the grapes must be hand-harvested and a complete destemming happens before fermentation with an extended maceration to maximize color and flavor. This is followed with 12 months of aging half the wine in Stainless and the other in French Oak.

What the Critics Said:

“The rich and plush this wine has excellent integration of restrained toasty oak with ripe blueberry and blackberry fruit on the well-structured palate. Just beginning to show what it is made of. Long, rather compact finish.”

92 pts – James Suckling

When we opened the bottle, it was tight at first a little bit of aeration in the glass or opening of the bottle allowed the fruit to balance the toasty notes of spice with a touch of eucalyptus. This bit of opening allowed the fruit to come forward pomegranate, plums and blackberries allowing the wine to be easy to enjoy. Cheers!
